Dr. Yusuf Demir: 2025 could be a record-breaking year for heat!

Professor Dr. Yusuf Demir, Head of the Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) Faculty of Agriculture in Black Sea region of Samsun, stated that 2025 could be the hottest year on record and drew attention to the increasing risk of drought across Türkiye.

Professor Dr. Yusuf Demir, Head of the Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation at OMÜ’s Faculty of Agriculture, said that according to data from the General Directorate of Meteorology, while some parts of the Black Sea Region have seen rainfall, there is a serious drought overall.

Pointing out that the effects of the climate crisis are now being felt in concrete terms, Dr. Demir said, “The process we are experiencing all over the world is the climate crisis, and the effects of the climate crisis on the world and our country are causing us to experience a process in which the events we have been experiencing in recent days continue to increase.”

“When we look at the first six months of 2025 and examine the drought maps on the Meteorology General Directorate’s website, unfortunately, it reveals that the Black Sea region of Türkiye has experienced a very serious drought over the past two to three months, except for the rainfall it has received. Of course, if this process continues, it increases the risk of facing a very serious crisis in the coming months of July, August, and September,” Dr. Demir added…
