Press release…
Following a year of drought and water scarcity debates in 2025, Türkiye entered 2026 with rainfall. Professor Dr. Murat Türkeş noted that the long-awaited effective rainfall largely eliminated meteorological drought, but emphasised that hydrological, agricultural and ecological droughts continued to have an impact in the background.

According to Dr. Türkeş, who predicts that the rainy conditions could continue until the end of March, this process will improve drought indicators in the short term, but rising temperatures and evaporation due to climate change will continue to increase water stress in the long term.
Will the rainfall continue?
“I believe that these changing large-scale pressure and wind systems will allow the rainy conditions in Türkiye to continue until the end of March. Therefore, by the time we reach April, the agricultural drought may be largely over. However, winter rainfall will then cease and ‘we can anticipate that the spike in temperatures and evaporation will continue, except for temporary cooling periods,” he said.
Is the drought over?
As a result of the ongoing heavy rainfall, meteorological drought has almost completely disappeared. However, Dr. Türkeş warns that long-term hydrological, agricultural and ecological drought continues in the background.
Highlighting that the country has to cope with chronic drought, Türkeş added, “This is one of the climatological realities of Türkiye and the Mediterranean climate.”
