Celal Kadooğlu: Demand for basic food products naturally accelerate before Ramadan

Press release…

The Ramadan bounty of the Southeast from Middle Eastern and African markets…

In January, exports from the cereals, pulses, oilseeds and products sector in Southeastern Anatolia fell by 7.1 per cent compared to the same month last year, reaching 279.9 million dollars. During this period, exports fell by 12.3 per cent in tonnage to 355,500 tonnes, with 88,400 tonnes of pasta, 63,800 tonnes of wheat flour and 35,800 tonnes of sunflower oil exported.

Highlighting the region’s strong and sustainable supply structure in the basic food sector and its role in the Middle East and African markets, Celal Kadooğlu, Chair of the Southeastern Anatolia Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters’ Association, stated that the Middle East and North Africa, home to nearly half of the world’s approximately 2 billion Muslim population, are regions where their commercial relations have developed steadily for many years and where food security is of critical importance.

“Last year, these regions accounted for 76.3 per cent of the Southeast’s cereal sector exports, with a volume of 2.7 billion dollars. Countries such as Iraq, Syria, Djibouti, Ghana, Sudan and Somalia are among our largest markets. These countries stand out as our strategic partners, where our initiatives have been met with positive responses and where trust-based relationships have grown,” he said.

Pointing out that they are seeing a natural increase in demand for basic food products in these markets in the period leading up to Ramadan,” he added, “We view this period not merely as a sales calendar, but as a process that requires responsibility in terms of supply continuity and market stability.”
