Dr. Murat Türkeş: Drought problem will continue!

Professor Dr. Murat Türkeş, Board Member of the Boğaziçi University Climate Change and Policy Application and Research Centre stated that the impact of the prolonged agricultural, ecological and hydrological drought they are experiencing will not be relieved by the rainfall in October.

“We do not expect sufficient rainfall in the remaining months of this year, linked to large-scale and regional weather systems, to alleviate the hydrological, agricultural and ecological drought that has persisted for the last two years,” Dr. Türkeş said.

Indicating that rainfall has begun across Türkiye, but that drought-reducing rainfall is not expected until the end of the year, he noted, “The high-pressure systems in the north and east of Türkiye could be strong in October, November, and December. Therefore, while mid-latitude and Mediterranean frontal systems that bring rain may leave precipitation in the northwest and the Black Sea, they may not produce sufficient precipitation in large areas to the east.”

“It’s likely that the rest of October will be dry and dry, like September, across much of Türkiye, except for the Black Sea and northwest. This is because the main systems that brought precipitation to Türkiye in October, November, and December will remain relatively farther north and west, and due to the influence of high pressure, it appears likely that sufficient precipitation may not fall in the coming weeks. I predict that this situation will lead to the meteorological impact of both the North Atlantic and Mediterranean-origin frontal low pressures in Türkiye being insufficient to produce the expected effective and abundant regional precipitation,” he added…
