Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association (EZZİB) Chairman of the Board Davut Er said that in terms of world olive tree wealth, Spain ranks first with 330 million trees.”
Er said, “Although our country ranks 2nd with 193 million trees, it ranks 2nd and 3rd in table olive production and 3rd and 5th in olive oil. As can be understood from here, we lag behind competitor producing countries in productivity per tree. As a country, the way for us to have a greater say in the world olive and olive oil trade and to ensure continuity in exports is through production increase and stable production.”
“Our tree population should reach 300 million“
Mentioning that olive trees are a drought-resistant plant that grows mainly in barren lands, Er emphasized that most of the olive groves in the country lack irrigation infrastructure.
“In order to increase the yield per tree, drip and pressurized irrigation systems should be established and support for farmers such as electricity expenditures, diesel and fertilizer should be increased. According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, there are 193 million olive trees in our country,” Er added.
“We want our Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to continue the support of saplings and planting in order to increase the tree wealth of our country to at least 300 million. However, while increasing the presence of olive trees, the needs of our export sector should also be taken into account and the planting of the correct varieties in the right regions should be supported,” Er concluded…
