Ödemiş (a district of İzmir province) Chamber of Commerce (ÖTO) held a press conference on Wednesday, 8 July at the ÖTO Meeting Hall on the transfer of the ‘Bozdağ Chestnut Candy’ Geographical Indication to the Chamber.
The Chairman of ÖTO Rıfat Eriş, Board Members Sadık Güllü and Şevket Şanlı along with Chestnut Candy manufacturer Ender Özcan attended the meeting.
Rıfat Eriş, emphasized the importance they have attributed to the ‘Geographical Indication’ and ‘Guarantee Brand’ once more in his speech and continued his words as follows;
“Chestnuts are processed and sold as chestnut raw material for many years in Ödemiş region. Most of the chestnuts used in chestnut candy production are produced in Ödemiş and its surroundings. An average of 15,000 tons of chestnuts produced in Ödemiş, 1925 tons in Kiraz district, 1500 tons in Beydağ district and a total of 18425 tons of chestnuts are produced in our region. Thus it constitutes 25 percent of the 75 655 tons of chestnut production in general across Turkey. When we look at chestnut production in İzmir province, we can see 29470 tons of production and our region’s figures make up 62 percent of this amount.”
“Due to the fact that chestnut, which is the raw material of chestnut candy, is the homeland of Ödemiş, as Ödemiş Chamber of Commerce, we have carried out all necessary procedures to continue the registration of this product. I would like to express my thanks to Bozdağ İtimat Şekerleme (Candy manufacturer) company and Ender Özcan who brought such works to this day, especially in your presence,” Rıfat Eriş added.
Ender Özcan, the producer of Chestnut Candy, also said, ‘‘ We have been maintaining the Geographical Indication of Ödemiş Chestnut Candy for many years. In the following period, we held negotiations to continue the requirements of the Geographical indication of the Ödemiş Chamber of Commerce. And as we know that the Ödemiş Chamber of Commerce is closely interested in the transactions so we have seen the transfer of the registration as appropriate.”
