“BEET HAS BECOME THE MOST PRODUCED VEGETABLE CROP IN TURKEY”

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Bekir Pakdemirli said that sugar beet production reached 23 million tonnes in 2020/2021 marketing year and beet was the most produced vegetable crop.

Pakdemirli said, “Approximately 3.1 million tonnes of sugar was produced in the 2020/2021 marketing year, thus breaking an all-time record in beet and sugar production.”

Pakdemirli noted, “Beet has become the most produced vegetable product. Our beet production, which was 16.5 million tonnes in 2002, reached 23 million tonnes with an increase of approximately 39% in the marketing year 2020/2021 and became the most produced vegetable product in our country. While our beet yield per decare was 3.5 tonnes before 2002, it was 6.85 tonnes with an increase of 96% in the marketing year 2020/2021.”

Sugar production reached 3.1 million tons…

“While 1.6 million tonnes of sugar was produced in 2002, approximately 3.1 million tonnes of sugar was produced with an increase of 94% in the marketing year 2020/2021. Thus, all time records have been broken in beet and sugar production,” Pakdemirli added.

Production was made in all private sugar factories and their production increased by 24% compared to the previous year. In addition, 470 thousand tonnes of sugar will be exported directly or indirectly with a value of 150 million dollars in 2021. Since 2002, there has been no import for domestic consumption and all of the domestic sugar has been met by domestic and national sugar beet production. On the other hand, the starch-based sugar (NBŞ), which was sold domestically as 460 thousand tonnes before 2002, was reduced to 67 thousand tonnes with the regulation made in quotas,” Pakdemirli concluded…
