As the harvest season begins in Adıyaman, (a southeastern province of Turkey) the ‘land of almonds’ where Turkey’s largest almond orchards are located, producers are happy with the yield in the drought and flooding region.
The almond orchards, which were established with the support of the state and increased over 20 times in 8 years as a cultivated land, approached 75 thousand decares in terms of area. It is known that there are 4 million almond trees in Adıyaman province and 2 million 500 thousand of them are in Kahta district.
The harvest period has begun in the almond orchards, which are aimed to reach an area of 100 thousand decares in 2023. Producers harvest the almond trees by shaking them with a work machine.
Despite natural disasters such as storms, hail, floods and droughts this year, the producers, who are satisfied with the harvest, demand the yield rate, which was 44 last year, to be calculated as 55 this year and the tax rate of almonds imported from abroad to be increased.
Kahta District Director of Agriculture and Forestry Zülküf Orak said, “We expect a yield of 8-10 kilograms per tree despite the drought, storm and natural disasters experienced this year in the almond land of Adıyaman and the almond land of Kahta. We expect a yield that will make our producers smile. Our producer is satisfied with the yield this year. 2 million 500 thousand root almond trees out of 4 million root almond trees in Adıyaman are located in Kahta district,”
Kahta Chamber of Agriculture Chairperson Fatin Rüştü Turanlı listed the producer’s expectations and added, “We want the prices not to fall below 55 yield rate this year. If it falls below 55 yield rate, our cultivation areas will shrink. If the price we want is given, our dependence on abroad will decrease. Our Ministry of Trade should increase the tax rate on imported almonds, at least during the harvest period. We demand it.”
