A new strategy for the olive sector

Manisa’s district of Akhisar hosted a significant event that will preserve the heritage of olive cultivation and shed light on its future. The “Traditional Olive Cultivation Workshop”, organised by the Directorate General for Living Heritage and Cultural Activities under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, moved beyond a production-focused approach to reposition the olive within the framework of culture, tourism and promotion.

Value spanning from production to culture…

At the workshop held at the Egea Olive and Olive Oil Museum Restaurant, “traditional olive cultivation” – which was placed under protection by UNESCO in 2023 as part of intangible cultural heritage requiring urgent safeguarding – was assessed as a new area of opportunity for Türkiye. Participants reached a consensus that the preservation and development of olive cultivation must be addressed not only through agricultural policies but also in conjunction with cultural heritage and tourism strategies.

The workshop’s gala evening was hosted by the Akhisar Chamber of Commodity Exchange and the Akhisar Chamber of Industry and Commerce at Tireli Farm. Alper Alhat, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Akhisar Commodity Exchange, stated that the workshop marked the beginning of a new era for the sector.

Alhat noted that olive cultivation had continued to develop for many years with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and emphasised that the involvement of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism would create a significant multiplier effect…
