Wetlands, among the most threatened ecosystems on the planet and providing approximately 39 trillion dollars in benefits globally each year, are experiencing an average annual loss of 0.52 percent.

To raise awareness about wetlands, “World Wetlands Day” is celebrated worldwide every year on February 2nd.
Celebrated since 1997 to draw public attention, the day was officially declared “World Wetlands Day” by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution on August 30, 2021.
The “Convention on the Protection of Wetlands,” known as the “Ramsar Convention,” was signed in Ramsar, Iran, on February 2, 1971 and entered into force in 1975.
The Convention obligates 172 signatory countries to protect and ensure the rational management of wetlands.

Wetland losses continue…
According to assessments included in the Ramsar report published on the occasion of “World Wetlands Day,” at least 22 percent of wetlands worldwide have been lost since 1970.
The main reasons for wetland loss include factors such as the expansion of agricultural areas, unplanned urbanization, industrial activities, dam and road construction and climate change.

Wetlands, which cover approximately 6 percent of the world’s land surface, provide habitats for 40 percent of plant and animal species.
