Exports of onions and potatoes were tied to the foreground in order to avoid supply deficits in the country, foreign demand not to affect domestic market prices, to maintain stock status and to avoid fluctuating consumer prices.
“Product Tables”, which were created by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for the purpose of tracking the strategic and fluctuating agricultural products, closely followed the onion and potato on the field from planting to harvest.
Upon positive returns from the Product Tables, onion and potato exports on July 19 were excluded from the preliminary permission.
According to compilation from the Potato and Onion analysis prepared by the Product Tables for July, the pre-permit application in exports has been terminated in terms of the concentration of the harvest, the level of new season productions in both products to meet the country’s needs and the facilitation of export transactions.
Next is the winter harvest…
While harvesting is completed in Adana and Hatay provinces, winter production harvests started with Amasya partially from the middle of this month. The harvest is expected to accelerate later in August with Ankara and Çorum regions. In this context, the production of 2.2 million tons in 2019 is expected to be surpassed with 2.35 million tons this year, according to the first estimate of TURKSTAT.
In Potato, a fruitful season was experienced in Hatay, Adana and Izmir (Ödemiş) regions, where harvest was about to be completed. Winter production harvests are expected to start in mid-August in Niğde and Nevşehir regions and accelerate in September with other provinces. According to TURKSTAT’s first estimate, this year’s crop yield in potato production is expected to exceed 5.2 million tons in total. Last year, 4.9 million tons of potatoes were produced.
