Dr Yakup Karaaslan, Deputy General Director of Water Management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, stated that Türkiye is a country with water stress and that the amount of water will decrease in 2030 and the country will become water poor.
SAMSUN – Speaking at the Kızılırmak Basin Water Board meeting, Dr. Yakup Karaaslan, Deputy Director General of Water Management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, said: that the amount of water per capita in Türkiye is 2 thousand 113 tonnes.
“In international indicators, Türkiye is a country with water stress. In 2030, if we do not take the necessary measures, this amount will fall below one thousand cubic metres and we will become a water poor country,” Karaaslan said.
Kızılırmak Basin Water Board meeting was held in Black Sea region province of Samsun with the participation of protocol members and institutions from 14 provinces. Speaking at the meeting, Deputy General Director of Water Management Dr. Yakup Karaaslan explained, “Our country is located in the Mediterranean Basin. It is seriously affected by climate change. As the General Directorate of Water Management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, we have carried out a project on the impact of climate change on water resources. In this project, we studied how much water potential we have in all our basins in 2030 and 2050, how much we can use, how much we need to allocate to where and how much we need to allocate. In 2030, our population decreases by 20 percent and our water potential decreases by 10 percent. The amount of water per capita in Turkey is 2,113 tonnes.”
