Mediterranean province of Antalya’s Commodity Exchange (ATB) President Ali Çandır stated that there is a deepening water problem in the region and there is a need for effective water management and called for product pattern planning, switching to fully closed circuit irrigation systems and taking water harvesting into investment planning.
Çandır also stated that agricultural production in Türkiye has increased by 17 percent in tonnes in the last 5 years.
Pointing out that this increase is largely due to the spike in productivity and change in production pattern, Çandır reminded that while the prices of agricultural and food products in the world are decreasing, they are rising in Türkiye.
“We should all use water resources efficiently”
Highlighting that there is a water problem in some districts of the province, Çandır said, “An effective water management is needed for a solution. The product pattern should be planned according to the water situation in the basins. Completely closed circuit irrigation systems should be switched to. The issue of water harvesting should be urgently included in the infrastructure investment planning of the public sector. Agriculture is not the only sector responsible for the efficient use of water resources and climate change.”
