TURKEY RANKS 4TH IN VEGETABLE PRODUCTION AND 6TH IN FRUITS!

Mersin Commodity Exchange Chairman Abdullah Özdemir reminded that 2021 was declared the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables by FAO and said, “Our country has a great potential in the field of agriculture and food. According to FAO (2019) data, Turkey ranks fourth in world vegetable production and sixth in fruit production.”

Özdemir explained, “When analyzed in terms of exports, our country ranks eighth in world fruit exports and ninth in vegetables in terms of quantity. We are in a leading position both in the production and export of apricots, raisins, cherries, figs, hazelnuts, poppy seeds and quince products.”

“Fruit and vegetable consumption in our country is above the world average”

Emphasizing that the consumption of fruits and vegetables in Turkey is above the world average, Özdemir added, “While the per capita vegetable consumption in the world is 141 kilograms, it is 230 kilograms in our country. The world consumption per capita in fruit is 77 kilograms and 128 kilograms in Turkey. In addition, according to TURKSTAT data, we are a self-sufficient country in both fruit and vegetables.”

“By the way Mersin is one of the provinces that contribute to this performance of our country. According to TURKSTAT data our province, which meets 11 percent of Turkey’s fruit production, ranks first in this field. Our province also provides 8 percent of Turkey’s vegetable production and is in the third position in the country,” Özdemir concluded…
