In the city, which was one of the places where rose oil and rose water were produced for the Ottoman palace, efforts to spread rose cultivation and create added value are continuing.

The Trakya Agricultural Research Institute, Edirne Municipality and the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry also supported the efforts initiated five years ago under the leadership of Trakya University.

Within this scope, rose gardens established at various points in the city have exceeded 15,000 square metres.

With the application and research centre established at Trakya University, research into the genetic characteristics of the Edirne rose has begun.

“The Edirne rose has great potential’

Assoc. Professor Dr. Nilgün Becenen, Director of the Trakya University Edirne Rose and Red Application Research Centre, stated that the Edirne rose is an important cultural value of the city.

Noting that the Edirne rose is frequently mentioned in historical documents and archive records, Becenen said that they are working to revive this value and increase its recognition.

Emphasising the need to protect the Edirne rose through planned and targeted efforts, Becenen said, “We are conducting these studies in line with the objectives and goals of our centre. We are making plans to uncover historical documents related to the Edirne rose and conduct scientific studies. The genetics, oil content and rose water properties of the Edirne rose need to be fully revealed.”
