Osman Bağış: The best way to prevent water scarcity in agriculture is modern irrigation systems

Osman Bağış, Chairman of the Adana Commodity Exchange (ATB) Assembly, emphasized the importance of using modern irrigation systems to prevent water scarcity in Türkiye, saying, “In Adana and Çukurova, closed drip and pressurized irrigation systems are increasing agricultural productivity and farmers are reaping the rewards of their labour.”

New methods to enhance agricultural productivity have emerged in response to the increasingly severe water crisis in Türkiye. According to experts, the shift to modern irrigation systems, rather than open channels and flood irrigation, has accelerated in agriculture, a major area where existing water resources are used most intensively. In recent years, closed drip and pressurized irrigation systems, in particular, prevent water waste and minimize losses. These methods are reported to allow for more controlled water use and significantly increase crop yields. In an interview with Demirören News Agency, ATB Assembly Chairman Osman Bağış stated that modern irrigation techniques provide savings of 50-60 percent compared to traditional methods, while also reducing farmers’ production costs and boosting their income.

Highlighting that using a closed drip irrigation system and a pressurized irrigation system results in higher yields and improved quality, Bağış noted, “You get higher yields and better products. You save on labour and reduce fertilizer use. With a drip system, you only irrigate the plant, not the field. Closed pressurized irrigation is especially important in this era of water scarcity. Currently, the Yedigöze Dam in the İmamoğlu region is a good example of pressurized irrigation. We want irrigation systems in Adana and throughout our country to switch to closed pressurized irrigation.”
