Muzaffer Kayhan: Hemp is an important raw material for our industry and sustainability

Hemp, which stands out with its wide range of usage areas and environmentally friendly features, is shown among the strategic raw materials of the future. At the Hemp for a Sustainable Future Workshop organised by the Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EIB) and the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of Textile Engineers (TMO) at the EIB service building, it was emphasised that Türkiye can be an important actor in the global hemp market, which is expected to reach 100 billion dollars by 2050.

Muzaffer Kayhan, Vice President of Aegean Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association, stated that hemp is a plant that stands out with its versatile use, environmentally friendly production features and high economic potential.

Pointing out that in the textile and ready-to-wear sectors, it is preferred due to its durability and longevity, high resistance to UV rays, recyclable and biodegradable and natural antibacterial properties, Kayhan said, “We will continue to support our Association to popularise hemp, which is an important raw material for our sector and for sustainability. The main environmental features of hemp; It grows with 50-70 percent less water compared to traditional fibres such as cotton. It is naturally resistant to pests and minimises the use of pesticides and herbicides. Uses the soil efficiently by offering multiple harvests per year.”

“Thanks to its phytoremediation feature, it cleans polluted soils and increases organic matter accumulation. Most importantly, it contributes to the fight against climate change by absorbing CO₂ in the atmosphere with its carbon sink feature, and rapidly stores carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere through photosynthesis. These features make hemp a strategic product not only economically but also ecologically,” Kayhan added…
