MUHAMMET OZTURK: POPPY SEED EXPORTS EXCEED 81 MILLION DOLLARS IN THE FIRST HALF OF THIS YEAR

Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EIB) reported that poppy seed exports, which were 7.9 million dollars in the first half of last year, exceeded 81 million dollars this year with the opening of the Indian market after 2.5 years.
According to the statement made by the EIB, 67 million 380 thousand dollars of white poppy seeds were exported to India, which opened its market between 9 May and 9 June 2022.

Thus, poppy seed exports, which were 7.9 million dollars in the first half of last year, exceeded 81 million dollars in the January-June period of this year.

White poppy sales accounted for 75.5 million dollars of Turkiye’s poppy seed exports. Blue poppy exports were recorded as 5.5 million dollars and yellow poppy exports as 87 thousand dollars.

After India, the countries that exported the most poppy seeds were Nepal with 4 million dollars and the United States with 1.3 million dollars.

“WE ARE HAPPY AFTER 2,5 YEARS”

Muhammet Öztürk, Chairman of the Aegean Cereals, Pulses, Oil Seeds and Products Exporters’ Association, whose views were given in the statement, reminded that the export of poppy seeds to India, which was interrupted for 2.5 years due to the Covid-19 outbreak, kicked off again this year.

Noting that they initially received a quota of 17,500 tonnes from India, Öztürk said:

“India approved the export of 15,746 tonnes of white poppy between 9 May and 9 June 2022. We were able to use about 90 percent of the quota. In return, we earned 67.3 million dollars in foreign currency to our country. Our poppy seed exports, which were 7.9 million dollars in the first half of 2021, exceeded 81 million dollars in 2022 with the opening of the export route to India. Our poppy producers and exporters experienced great happiness after a break of 2.5 years.”
