Metin Akman: Eggshells are of great industrial importance!

Metin Akman, Chairman of Egg Producers Products Industrialists Association (YÜSAD), unveiled that the pasteurised liquid and powder as well as the shell of the egg are very valuable in terms of industry and said that the egg shell used in the paint industry and construction can also be used as fertiliser and feed, and is a valuable product for many areas.

In his statement, Akman said that eggs, which are one of the most strategic protein sources of the world, are among the most important topics of the UN.

Pointing out that the egg, which is defined as the star component, is the closest to breast milk with its nutritional values among animal protein sources, Akman said, “Eggs are the most widely used animal protein with functional properties.”

“It collects and glues food”

Indicating that its functional properties enable the egg to be used in all food industries, Akman explained,

“You can use eggs in all kinds of food products such as meatballs, cakes, cream, chocolate and desserts. It has the ability to swell, gather and glue. The carbon footprint is the lowest proteni source. It is the most economical and easily accessible. Türkiye is among the top 10 of the world’s most important producers. It is a very strategic product. We should value egg producers and understand them well.”

“Türkiye should be among the top 10”

Underlining that Türkiye has a long way to go in the egg industry, Akman said, “Türkiye cannot even be among the top 50 countries in the world in the egg industry. If you look at the world’s top 10 producers, all of them are among the top 10 in the egg industry, but we are not among the 50.”

Akman stated that only 30 producers are likely to make 75 percent of Türkiye’s total egg production in the next 5-10 years and said that exports are as important as egg production.

Emphasising that protectionist policies have no benefit in terms of food security, Akman warned, “Protectionist policies increase supply and demand shocks and increase the imbalance of the market in the long term. Rising exports balances the supply and demand balance in the long term.”

Highlighting that the industry started from the moment the egg was broken, Akman added, “The industry breaks the egg and produces pasteurised liquid eggs. Then it goes fast towards the derivatives of these products. It can extend the shelf life up to 1-2 years. Egg powder can be included in the scope of licensed warehousing similar to milk powder as in other countries. When egg powder production spikes, it definitely enhance the welfare of the farmer, supply and demand flexibility increases and price stability is ensured. This is why the development of the egg industry is so important. 10 years ago, only 1 percent of total production was processed in the egg industry. It is between 25-30 percent in developed markets. Today, it has reached 8 percent in Türkiye. However, it should reach 25 and 30 percent and so we have a long way to go.”
