Turkish dried fig exporters send a message to the European Union, “We are doing our homework on dried figs”

To ensure that the journey of the heavenly fruit, dried figs, to its largest export market, the European Union, is healthy and sustainable, Mehmet Ali Işık, Chairman of the Aegean Dried Fruit and Products Exporters Association (EKMMİB) and Şemsettin Özgür, Vice Chair of EKMMİB, met with European Commission officials in Brussels.

Mehmet Ali Işık, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aegean Dried Fruit and Products Exporters Association, stated that after 2023 and 2024, in 2025 they would again meet with officials from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) in Brussels in 2025 to evaluate the official controls applied to dried fig exports and current developments in food safety, emphasising that it was a meeting where the sector was represented at the highest level within the European Union.

Işık also stated that they are in constant communication with officials from the European Union and the European Federation of Dried Fruits, Nuts, Canned Products and Similar Products Trade Federation (FRUCOM). He stressed that they aimed to strengthen food safety standards in Türkiye’s dried fig exports at the EU level and to secure the sustainable future of the sector, and that they had informed EU and FRUCOM officials about the work being carried out on sustainability on the Turkish side.

“We believe we have conveyed the message to EU officials that we have done our homework for the production of healthy dried figs,” Işık added…
