“Cotton, Türkiye’s strategic agricultural product!”

Fevzi Çondur, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aydın Commodity Exchange (ATB) and the National Cotton Council (UPK), highlighted the strategic importance of cotton for Turkish agriculture and industry in a statement made on 7 October, World Cotton Day.

Emphasising that cotton production is not limited to farmers alone, but encompasses a broad process involving agriculture, industry and exports, Çondur said, “Cotton is not just an agricultural product; it is a product of strategic importance for our country as the basic raw material in a broad value chain extending from textiles to ready-to-wear clothing. As the National Cotton Council, we will continue to seek solutions in cooperation with all parties in the sector.”

Türkiye ranks 7th in cotton production…

Stating that the world’s largest cotton-producing countries are China, India, Brazil, the USA, Pakistan and Australia, Çondur said that Türkiye ranks 7th. Sharing data on cotton cultivation area and production according to the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), Fevzi Çondur made the following assessment:

“According to ICAC data, 25 million 287 thousand tonnes of cotton were produced on 30 million 692 thousand hectares of cotton cultivation area worldwide in the 2024-2025 season. Our country ranked 12th in cotton cultivation area with 465 thousand hectares and 7th in cotton production with 840 thousand tonnes. It ranked 4th in cotton imports with approximately 1 million tonnes.”

“Reviewing the ICAC’s forecasts for the 2025-2026 season, global cotton production is expected to reach 25 million 438 thousand tonnes from 30 million 418 thousand hectares of cultivation area. Türkiye’s cotton cultivation area is projected to decline to 430 thousand hectares, with production falling to 780 thousand tonnes. Our cotton imports are also expected to remain at around 1 million tonnes,” he added…
