Kırkağaç melon receives Geographical Indication Registration from the European Union…

Kırkağaç Melon, which is grown with ancestor seed in Kırkağaç district of Manisa and distinguished from other melon types with its taste, colour and smell, was entitled to receive the Geographical Indication Registration Certificate from the European Union.

Kırkağaç Melon, which was granted Geographical Registration Certificate by the Turkish Patent Office in 2008 in Kırkağaç district of Manisa, which is famous for its melon, was granted the EU Geographical Registration Certificate in 2021 under the leadership of then District Governor Murat Büyükköse and the project named ‘Kırkağaç Melon Deserves EU Geographical Registration’ prepared by the EU Project Office of Kırkağaç District Governorship was applied for ‘EU Geographical Indication’ with the support of Zafer Development Agency. Kırkağaç District Governor Zafer Oktay announced that Kırkağaç Melon has received geographical indication registration from the European Union.

Making statements on the subject, Kırkağaç District Governor Zafer Oktay stated that the registration of Kırkağaç Melon was published in the bulletin of the Official Journal of the European Union dated 24 March 2025 and numbered C 2025/1823 and emphasised that it is a great gain for the district and the region.
