Harvest continue in Mediterranean province of Mersin, which has an important place in Türkiye’s fresh fruit and vegetable production.

Figs, which are harvested intensively especially in Mut district during this period, are in high demand by the consumer. The products harvested at sunrise are sent to all four corners of the country through traders. This year, about 100 thousand tonnes of figs are expected to be harvested until the end of the season.

Stating that they have received more than enough for their labour this year, the producers said that last year the prices were between 20 and 30 liras, while this year they started with 100 liras and now they find buyers at 80 liras.

Highlighting that in the 2024 season, the climatic conditions were very suitable for figs and that there is no other region other than Mut that can offer figs to the market at the earliest, Muharrem Yılmaz, Head of Mut Chamber of Agriculture, noted that fig saplings were planted on approximately 10 thousand decares of land.

Indicating that about 10 thousand families in the district make a living with the income they earn from figs, Yılmaz added that they expect a yield of 100 thousand tonnes this year…
