DR. NAZIM ŞEKEROĞLU: GLOBAL COFFEE CONSUMPTION INCREASES DAY BY DAY

A study has showed that coffee consumption is increasing day by day.

Kilis 7 Aralık University faculty member, Mediterranean Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Association (ATABDER) Chairperson, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Food and Control, Coffee and Chicory Commission Member, Professor Dr. Nazım Şekeroğlu said that coffee consumption is increasing day by day.

Dr. Şekeroğlu also stated that due to the decrease in coffee supply in producing countries and the increase in world coffee consumption, coffee prices went up for the eighth consecutive month in June 2021.

Dr. Şekeroğlu said, “According to the data of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the average price of coffee reached 141.03 USD/lb in June 2021.”

Pointing out that this figure corresponds to a rise of about 33.2 percent compared to the same period last year, Dr. Şekeroğlu noted, “Comparing to the coffee price recorded last October (2020), which was at the level of 105,85 USD/lb, today’s figures are at the highest level. In fact, this figure has approached the highest value of 145.82 USD/lb in the past years (November 2016).”

“Similarly, increases continue in Arabica, Robusta and all other coffee varieties. So where are coffee prices headed? Is a new coffee crisis at hand? Statistics show that there has been a 10.1 percent decrease in exports of coffee producing countries in the last year, from May-2020 (10.9 million 60-kilogram bags) to May 2021 (9.8 million 60-kilogram bags),” Dr. Şekeroğlu added…
