According to researches, dairy products are an effective option for quenching thirst…

Maintaining the fluid balance necessary for the body to maintain its normal physiological functions, i.e., hydration, is one of the fundamental elements of human health. This becomes even more important during Ramadan, when fasting is observed.
Traditionally, water is considered the best way to quench thirst. However, recent scientific studies have shown that not only the water content but also the nutrient and electrolyte composition of beverages is decisive in hydration and that some nutrient-rich beverages can be at least as effective as water or even more effective in some cases.
“Milk and fermented dairy products protect against fluid loss”

Professor Dr. Hami Alpas from the Department of Food Engineering at Middle East Technical University, drawing attention to the effect of milk and dairy products on the body’s water balance, stated that the nutritional components in milk, such as protein, lactose and electrolytes, slow down gastric emptying and reduce fluid loss. “This helps retain fluids in the body for longer. According to some scientific studies, milk is at least as effective as water in quenching thirst, while other studies suggest it is even more effective,” Dr. Alpas said.
Highlighting that milk-based fermented beverages like ayran and kefir are effective in quenching thirst due to their liquid content and similar nutritional composition to milk, Dr. Alpas added, “These beverages, being probiotic, are also very beneficial for digestive health and overall health.”
