Professor Dr. Ebru Yaşa Kafkas from Çukurova University stated that blueberry can be grown in 7 regions of the country and are protective against cancer diseases. In Türkiye, 2023 blueberry production reached 5 thousand 274 tonnes and 10 thousand tonnes are expected this year.
Çukurova University (ÇÜ) Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture lecturer Professor Dr. Ebru Yaşa Kafkas announced that blueberries, which are known to prevent cancer and described as ‘super food’ in the world, can be grown in 7 regions of the country by using different methods and the right variety, and said, “We have a production potential of 100 thousand tonnes in our country for blueberries.”
In recent years, interest in the production and consumption of blueberries, which have been shown to be protective against cancer in studies, has soared in Türkiye as in the world. According to TURKSTAT data in 2020, when production started in Türkiye, the amount of blueberry production was one thousand 287 tonnes, while this figure increased to 5 thousand 274 tonnes according to 2023 data. Pointing out that it is possible to grow this fruit in 7 regions both in the field and in greenhouses, Professor Dr. Ebru Yaşa Kafkas, a faculty member at ÇÜ Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, emphasized that they expect this year’s production amount to be 10 thousand tonnes at this rate.
