Apricot kernels, one of Malatya region’s geographical sign registered products, generated 10 million dollars in 9 months.
The income from apricot kernels continue to contribute to the provincial economy. In September, an input of 2 million 360 thousand dollars was provided in return for 880 tonnes of apricot kernels exported. Apricot kernels are mostly consumed as snacks in the domestic and foreign markets.
Ramazan Özcan, Chair of the Malatya Commodity Exchange, stated that apricot kernel exports made the producer smile.
Pointing out that apricot is an export product with its fruit and kernel, Özcan reminded that they are striving to increase the foreign currency inflow from apricot.
5 thousand tonnes of export is targeted until the end of the year…
Emphasizing that 438 tonnes of apricot kernels were exported in August, Özcan said, “We exported 880 tonnes of apricot kernels in September. Compared to last year, this year we have made a significant progress in terms of both quantity and income in apricot kernel exports. In 9 months of the year, we exported 3 thousand 354 tonnes of kernels and earned 10 million dollars in return.”
Noting that production costs have soared in recent years and apricot kernel is an important income for the producer in meeting the production costs, Özcan added, “The producer reduces the cost items by obtaining an important income from apricot kernel. We plan to complete apricot kernel exports with 5 thousand tonnes at the end of the year. We aim to export over 1500 tonnes in the next 3 months.”
