Celal Kadooğlu, Chair of the Southeast Anatolia Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters Association, stated that this year’s buoyancy in the Syrian market has provided the necessary space to fill the gap, but that Türkiye may need to balance this by making counter-moves, keeping an eye on Iraq’s initiatives.

“In Iraq, which has adopted a ‘high stock-selective import’ policy in grain trade, officials believe that they have created a strategic wheat reserve with this year’s wheat production of 5.1 million tonnes. They believe that this will allow them to keep imports more limited, quality-oriented and restricted to seasonal tenders,” he said.
“Conversely, the halving of the winter sowing plan due to rainfall issues and restrictions on exports of their products indicate that they accept there will be a significant crop loss next year. Moreover, Iraq has a production model based on a single type of wheat and this situation increases quality problems, meaning that Türkiye’s demand and need for high-quality wheat flour cannot be met,” he noted.
Pointing out that all these developments have transformed the Iraqi market from one of large-volume routine sales to one where opportunities focused on quality, tied to tenders and with critical timing must be monitored, he added, “Short-term demand contraction may continue, but preparing to highlight our high product quality standards and logistical speed advantage in anticipation of soared demand in the new year will be decisive.”
