Girit: We started exporting eggs to Russia for the first time, we opened fresh chicken exports to Iran
Bedri Girit, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aegean Aquaculture and Animal Products Exporters’ Association, said: “We are in the top 10 in the world in aquaculture and animal products. We are the largest in Europe in sea bream and sea bass, we are also the largest in the world in pine honey, we are the sixth in the poultry sector in the dairy sector. Compared to last year, there is a 14.2 per cent decline in Türkiye in 2023. This is due to milk and dairy products. Our exports of milk and dairy products, which were 500-600 million dollars, fell to 267 million dollars in 2022 with the ban on butter and milk powder.”
“Secondly, we have problems in the poultry sector due to bird flu. We have a loss of 100 million dollars. If we compare Türkiye and the Aegean, the decline in the Aegean is around 4.5 per cent. In fish and fish derivatives, we, as Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EIB), make 68 per cent of the country in general and 42 per cent in general animal products,” Girit added.
Pointing out that last week, they started exporting eggs to Russia for the first time, Girit concluded, “We kicked off exporting fresh chicken to a country for the first time in the world and we opened fresh chicken exports to Iran. This is an indication of how good the hygienic conditions of the shelf life of our chicken meat are, the Philippines market has opened too. England, Malaysia and Indonesia are also on our agenda.”
