Indigenous seeds leave its mark on Turkish agriculture…

Agriculture is done with local seed; domestic seed stamp on production…

With 911 indigenous seeds, Türkiye reduced the dependence of farmers on foreign seeds while protecting its biological wealth. In Türkiye, 57 per cent of bread wheat, 63 per cent of durum wheat, 68 per cent of barley, 50 per cent of rice, 90 per cent of lentils, 60 per cent of chickpeas and 21 per cent of cotton are produced with seeds developed by TAGEM.

As the world population increases, the demand for food increases in parallel. Turkey, which is the largest agricultural economy in the European Union and the top 10 largest agricultural economy in the world with its agricultural production, carries out important studies in plant breeding for the development of domestic seed production through the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

44 PER CENT FROM TAGEM…

Among the projects carried out by TAGEM Research Institute Directorates, field crops have a large share in seed production with 100 per cent domestic and national 911 varieties. These developed varieties are delivered to farmers. In the field of field crops, approximately 44 per cent of the certified seed production in Turkey consists of varieties developed by TAGEM.

In the country, 57 percent of bread wheat, 63 percent of durum wheat, 68 percent of barley, 50 percent of paddy, 90 percent of lentils, 60 percent of chickpea and 21 percent of cotton are supplied from domestic and national seeds developed by TAGEM Research Institutes. Thanks to the seeds developed with domestic facilities, the foreign dependency of the sector is reduced and biological wealth is protected.

REGISTERED FIRSTS…

Developed hemp, siyez (spa) wheat, black paddy with high antioxidant content, barley varieties without spelt to be used for dietary purposes and spelt wheat, bread wheat produced with doubled haploid method and oleic safflower variety were registered for the first time and offered to the use of farmers. Two inducer maize lines were registered for the first time in Türkiye and necessary applications were made for their protection. Developed 10 domestic potato varieties and medicinal aromatic plants were also brought into production.

ALSO DEVELOPED FOR VEGETABLES AND FRUITS…

Breeding activities are also continuing in horticultural crops. The rate of domestic hybrid vegetable seed use has reached 60 per cent. Türkiye’s seed sector has developed 320 qualified lines and 42 varieties needed in tomato, pepper, eggplant, cucumber, melon, watermelon and pumpkin species. In the last 10 years, 125 fruit, 35 grape, 37 vegetable and 21 ornamental plants were registered in horticultural crops…
