In Hatay, one of Türkiye’s fertile lands, the banana harvest continues in the greenhouse…
Hatay, the agricultural region of Türkiye’s fertile lands, stands out in the production of tropical products. Mehmet Alkan, a farmer in Demirköprü neighbourhood of Antakya district of Hatay province, grows bananas in his 10-decare greenhouse he established 3 years ago. Alkan, who is satisfied with the abundance of the harvest that started recently, sells the kilogram price of the product from the greenhouse between 20 TL and 25 TL from time to time. Reacting to the difference between the prices on the market shelves and greenhouse prices, farmer Alkan said that this situation upsets them.
“While bananas in the greenhouse are 20 – 25 TL, there are prices between 50 TL – 80 TL on the market shelves”
Farmer Mehmet Alkan stated that he was pleased with the banana harvest in his 10-decare greenhouse and said, “It has been 3 years since I established the banana greenhouse here. We are harvesting here on 10 decares of land. Although banana is a tropical fruit type, thank God we are very good in terms of yield. However we are not satisfied with the price. The price here this year varies between 20 TL and 25 TL. When we go out, we see a figure between 50 and 80 TL in the markets. This makes us very sad.” “While we, as producers, are dealing with all kinds of pesticides and fertilisers, the outside earns one times more than we get. We are the same as last year’s harvest. Banana production takes 12 months from birth to harvest,” he added…
