Wheat took centre stage in the agricultural commodities market last month…
In the commodities market, the agricultural sector saw sharp rises last month due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, global drought and geopolitical tensions, with movements in wheat prices taking centre stage.
Global climatic factors and geopolitical developments continue to be decisive in determining the prices of agricultural commodities. Damage to ports caused by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, combined with the global drought and the impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon, led to sharp fluctuations in the agricultural commodities market in July.

The El Niño weather phenomenon has also had an impact on coffee prices. This weather phenomenon is being felt in South America and South-East Asia. Consequently, the main reason for the rise in coffee prices was the increase in temperatures and the decrease in rainfall in Brazil and Vietnam.
Brazil is the world’s largest producer and exporter of ‘Arabica’ coffee, whilst Vietnam holds the same position for ‘Robusta’ coffee. Rising temperatures in these countries are preventing coffee trees from flowering. A reduction in flowering means a decline in the harvest.

Zafer Ergezen, an expert in futures and commodities markets, told an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent: “The risks associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon are having an impact on wheat prices.”
Explaining that El Niño means air temperatures in some regions are rising above seasonal norms, Ergezen noted that this points to drier weather.
Ergezen noted that this weather phenomenon is causing concerns regarding production in some regions, adding that these effects are being observed in South America, South-East Asia and Australia.
Ergezen highlighted that Australia, the US, France and Germany are major wheat-producing countries, emphasising that temperatures in these nations have been exceptionally high recently.
Stating that this situation has naturally caused concern in the wheat market, Ergezen noted that production forecasts have been revised downwards, leading to a rise in wheat prices.
Ergezen noted that the El Niño effect is expected to continue until February 2027, adding, “However, we are seeing this effect not only in wheat but also in agricultural products such as cotton, rice, cocoa and coffee.”
