“WE SHOULD USE KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE WHEAT”

Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Field Crops Lecturer Professor Dr. Taner Akar, said that agriculture has become a sector based on knowledge and technology.

Dr. Akar said, “We must use knowledge and technology to improve the yield and quality of wheat.”

In cooperation with Antalya Commodity Exchange (ATB) and Antalya Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, an online panel with the subject of “How Can We Increase Yield and Quality in Wheat?” was held.

Dr. Akar, in his speech at the panel, stated that when agriculture is mentioned in Antalya, greenhouse production comes to mind, but wheat is also an important crop produced in the region.

Emphasizing that the roots of wheat are in Anatolia, Dr. Akar noted, “Wheat was strategic in the past. Now it is a strategic product too. We have to develop this crop. Agriculture has become a sector based on knowledge and technology. We should use information and technology to improve the yield and quality of wheat. We have the opportunity to obtain 600 kilograms of wheat per decare through our works.”

Akar pointed out that the irrigation rate is low and the agricultural lands are fragmented so these are the most important obstacles to having productivity and quality.

“Wheat has become a security blanket like insurance”

Antalya Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Directorate, Coordination and Agricultural Data Branch Manager İbrahim Irmak indicated that in the process of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19), people piled up food products such as flour and pasta instead of meat, milk, fruit.

“Wheat has become a security blanket for people like insurance,” Irmak added.
