“WE SHOULD INCREASE THE PRODUCTION OF PULSES WITH HIGH PROTEIN RATINGS”

Hüseyin Arslan, Chairman of the Board of the Mediterranean Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters’ Association (AHBİB), said that a new consumption trend based on vegetable protein has spread in the world with the influence of global organizations.

Arslan announced that the amount of pulses used to obtain protein is 1 million tonnes in 2020. Hüseyin Arslan said, “There is a need for new policies to rise the production of varieties with high protein content in pulses agriculture in our country.”

‘The value of a tonne of pulse protein is 8-9 thousand dollars’

Indicating that while the consumption of animal protein products decreased rapidly in the American and European markets, there was a high increase in the consumption of vegetable protein products, Chairman of the Board of AHBİB Hüseyin Arslan noted, “R&D studies on pulses and cereal products surged as people started to turn to vegetable protein around the world. Over time, the plant protein industry based in the USA and Canada has reached billions of dollars. While the amount of pulses used to obtain protein will exceed 1 million tonnes in 2020, we expect this rate to exceed 1.5 million tonnes in 2021. This figure is equal to our one-year total pulses production in Turkey.”

“In the global pulses sector, products with high protein value such as peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas come to the fore. As Turkey, we should not miss this trend,” Arslan added…
