Dr. Yusuf Demir: Drought could displace 1 billion people by 2050

Professor Dr. Yusuf Demir, Head of the Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation at OMÜ Faculty of Agriculture, warned that ‘According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification,’ 135 million people worldwide are expected to migrate by 2030 as a result of this process!

Professor Dr. Yusuf Demir, Head of the Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation at the Faculty of Agriculture, Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ), reported that drought and climate change could force nearly 1 billion people to migrate by 2050.

In a written statement made on 17 June, World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, Dr. Demir noted that Türkiye became a party to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, which was adopted in Paris on 17 June 1994 and entered into force in 1996, in 1998 and that the convention marked a turning point in the fight against desertification.

“Drought, climate change, biodiversity erosion, land degradation, intensive agricultural practices and poor water management have become a crisis affecting more than 165 countries worldwide, including Türkiye and many diseases have emerged along with drought,” Dr. Demir added…
