Studies are carried out at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) to enhance the added value of hemp as an industrial product.
In addition to the cultivation and harvesting of hemp in the Black Sea province of Samsun, projects and R&D studies are conducted on its use in the defence industry, insulation material, health sector and industry.
Ondokuz Mayıs University Rector Professor Dr. Yavuz Ünal said that OMU started hemp production and processing studies 25 years ago.
In 2019, Ünal stated that they established the ‘Hemp Research Institute’ within the university and explained, “We have hosted serious studies on the transformation of hemp into an industrial product. Especially in our university, we have worked on the production of genes that can be grown in different regions, different soil and different climatic environments, and this work was deemed worthy of support by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). OMU actually offers a treasure to the country with more than 2 thousand cannabis genes.”
