Sebahattin Arslantürk: 2024 should be considered as a precautionary year in hazelnut exports

Sebahattin Arslantürk, the member of National Hazelnut Council (UFK), stated that they foresee a partial recovery in the European markets, adding that buyers will continue to act very cautiously and that they expect a season in which orders will be formed according to market movements.

Pointing out that the recovery can only be felt in the second half of 2024, Arslantürk underlined that 2024 should be considered as a precautionary year in hazelnut exports.

Indicating that that it is very important to boost the yield per unit in order to maintain their traditional superiority in hazelnut production and exports, he said, “Although production is carried out on 750 thousand hectares of land, the production amount is below 700 thousand tonnes. The average yield in Türkiye is 85 kg per decare, but in Trabzon province we cannot even reach 50 kg per decare. With 85 kg yield, we are the country with the world’s most inefficient production.”

“When the yield is so low, it is not possible for the producer to sustain this business with these production amounts and supports. If garden renewal works are emphasised, it is possible to increase the yield up to 4-5 times. For this reason, support policies in our country should encourage the producers to produce better quality and enhance the yield per unit,” he noted…
