‘SAVE YOUR FOOD’ CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY FAO AND TURKEY IN ANKARA…

May 20, 2020, Ankara, Turkey – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry launched the national campaign of ‘Save Your Food’ so as to increase the awareness of the public about food loss and waste along with the mobilization of all actors across the supply chain.

It means preventing food waste and losses, revising institutional and legal frameworks, improving food production, preservation and distribution methods and changing resource-intensive consumption models.

After the opening speech of rollout broadcasted live, FAO Sub-Regional Coordinator for Central Asia and Turkey Representative Viorel Gutu said: “The Agenda for Sustainable Development includes a wide range of food loss and waste in 2030. Although there are major challenges ahead, many countries have already started to act to reduce food loss and waste. In this context, we appreciate Turkey’s strong leadership and their efforts, especially on the issue of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. We are pleased to continue our cooperation within the framework of ‘Protect Your Food’ campaign.”

The campaign is a part of the initiative of “Reduction of Food Losses and Waste in Central Asian countries” carried out by FAO and Turkey Partnership Programme also funded by Turkish government. Regional initiative in addition to Turkey will also provide support Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan for the development of national strategies and action plans to reduce food loss and waste.

“We must not forget that our efforts will be effective only when coordinated and based on information,” said Bekir Pakdemirli, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, who co-chaired the opening, while trying to make progress in reducing food loss and waste. Pakdemirli continued his words as follows:

“For this reason, it is very important for all actors to work together to establish a sustainable culture of production and consumption and to raise awareness about the problem of food loss and waste”.

The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu while expressing their support for ‘Save Your Food’ campaign in a powerful way, he added, “We would like to make contribution to the national fight against food loss and waste.”

Dilara Koçak, a nutritionist and active supporter of the campaign, moderated the launch.

About the FAO-Turkey Food and Agriculture Partnership Programme (FTPP)…

The overall objective of the programme is to provide support to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan for issues of food security and poverty reduction. Founded in 2007 and funded by the Government of Turkey, the programme has so far been contributed a total of 20 million US Dollars. The coordination of the programme is carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
