The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will mark the seventh International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on 29 September 2026, renewing calls for action to reduce food loss and waste and build more sustainable, resilient and equitable agrifood systems.
Around 13 percent of food produced globally is lost after harvest and before reaching retail , while 19 percent of food available to consumers is wasted at retail, in food service and in households . Yet an estimated 645 million people faced hunger in 2025 , highlighting the need to make agrifood systems more efficient and equitable.
Reducing food loss and waste can help address food insecurity, climate change, and biodiversity loss while easing pressure on natural resources. Food loss and waste contribute to roughly 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions , while approximately 1.4 billion hectares of land are used to produce food that is never consumed .
Under the theme “Transformative Potential of Reducing Food Loss and Waste”, this year’s observance will examine the relevance of reducing food loss and waste for the forestry sector. Held during the 28th session of FAO’s Committee on Forestry and World Forest Week, the event will explore opportunities to reduce pressure on land and forests while improving food security and nutrition, productivity and economic growth.
The event will feature high-level remarks by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu, and a video message from UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.
FAO also plans to publish a Food Loss Index data map on 29 September.
The event will take place at the Sheikh Zayed Centre, FAO headquarters, Rome, on Tuesday, 29 September, from 12:30 to 14:00 CEST.
FAO Goodwill Ambassadors and Champions will support this year’s observance through a social media campaign to raise awareness of food loss and waste.
Rodrigo Pacheco, FAO Goodwill Ambassador for Ecuador, will share a video highlighting his work with an edible forest and the links between food, forests and biodiversity. FAO Champion Alessandro Borghese will highlight the importance of forests, while FAO Champion Ruben Bondì will encourage young audiences to rethink how they use food.
FAO Champions Luka Nachkhebia and Heinz Wuth will bring the campaign to audiences in Georgia and Chile, respectively. The Italian Taekwondo Federation, an FAO Champion, will contribute content connecting healthy diets and responsible food choices with active lifestyles…
