Turkish Packaging Manufacturers’ Association (ASD) President Zeki Sarıbekir said that hygiene is the most effective method of protection in this pandemic period.
Sarıbekir said, “Packaging is a product that provides the most economical and reliable delivery and promotion of the food in the conditions in which it is produced and to protect food from other contaminants until it reaches the consumer, also to minimize food spoilage and quality losses.”
“Packages protect our daily needs such as bread, milk, cheese, pulse and vegetables and fruits while also protecting our health. Foods are vulnerable to bacteria and rot, spoiling rapidly and threatening health. Moreover, the origin of such foods cannot be traced and their shelf life is not reliable. Packaged food is indispensable for human health in the world shaken by the coronavirus.,” Sarıbekir noted.
“We must avoid waste!”
Stating that it is not possible to come across unpackaged products in developed countries, Sarıbekir added, “In terms of the prevention of waste along with hygiene all food products should be sold as packaged. Though packaging matters that much, many unpacked foods are still sold in our country.”
“The amount of food that is wasted in Turkey annually 26 million tonnes and 214 billion liras. In addition every day 4.9 million pieces of bread and 1.7 billion pieces of bread go to the landfill per year. This is a huge loss for both the individuals and national economy. Therefore serious measures should be taken in order to avoid wasting which is one of Turkey’s biggest problems. Using packaged foods and extending the life of the food is just one of these measures,” Sarıbekir concluded…
