A working group was created for sustainable production and export.
Ömer Celal Umur, Chairperson of Aegean Tobacco Exporters’ Association, stated that the tobacco product item with the highest increase in 2020 was hookah (narghile) tobacco, which achieved an increase of 46 percent compared to the previous year.
Umur said that they can attribute the increase in hookah tobacco, which provides an export income of 30 million dollars in the January-May 2021 period, to the rise in the demand for hookahs across the world in recent years.
Umur said, “During 2021, we will work to add new countries to our potential markets, while improving our market shares in existing markets. In 2021, sustainability will occupy a very large place in our agenda, as in the rest of the world. In order to ensure sustainable production and export in leaf tobacco trade, a sustainability working group has been established with the participation of the representatives of leaf tobacco exporting companies that are members of our Association.”
Social responsibility projects in areas such as production, environment, infrastructure, workforce, water use…
Expressing that the working group will discuss solutions and project proposals on various issues related to tobacco farming, Umur added, “Several social responsibility projects will be created in areas such as production, environment, infrastructure, workforce and water use in tobacco farming.”
“In today’s world, where sustainability has become an indisputable issue in every field from production to export, ideas that will come out of the working group are of great importance so that leaf tobacco farming and export can be provided in a sustainable production ecosystem with the lowest possible impact on nature,” Umur concluded…
