In the last year, exports of tobacco, one of the traditional export products of the Aegean Region, soared by 10 percent from 915 million dollars to 1 billion 4 million dollars.
Umur: ‘Our goal is to maintain the 1 billion dollar level’

Stating that cigarette consumption has remained flat worldwide, Ömer Celal Umur, Chairperson of the Aegean Tobacco Exporters’ Association, said that in this environment, tobacco and tobacco product exports have not soared in terms of volume, but thanks to the increase in average export prices, they have achieved a 7 percent rise in export revenues and that their goal as a sector is to maintain the 1 billion dollar level.
Pointing out that the percentage of domestic tobacco in cigarettes produced in Türkiye must be 30 percent starting in 2025, Umur said, “That is why the production of large-leaf Virginia and Burley tobacco has surged. Of our 73 million kilograms of tobacco production, 30 million kilograms are large-leaf tobacco. Large-leaf Virginia and Burley tobacco is currently used only in the domestic market. As the quality of this production improves, it will also contribute to tobacco exports.”
“Due to the rise in the use of domestic tobacco, we expect a slight increase in tobacco production in the 2025 season. We could reach 80 million kilograms of production in 2025,” Umur added…
