NAİM KOCA: COFFEE CONSUMPTION HAS MORE THAN TRIPLED IN 10 YEARS

Stating that Turkey is not a ‘tea country’ as it is considered, barista trainer Naim Koca said that since 2011, coffee consumption per capita in Turkey has increased more than 3 times.

“Although the factors are various, coffee consumption per capita in Turkey has increased from 350 grams to 1.1 kilograms in 10 years,” Koca noted.

Naim Koca, who gives barista training approved by the Ministry of National Education within the Barista Academy in Ataşehir region of istanbul, evaluated coffee, Turkish coffee and the adventure of coffee in Turkey.

“OUR HISTORY OF COFFEE IS OLD”

Expressing that contrary to the fact that Turkey is known as a ‘country of tea’, the history of coffee in Turkey is older, Koca explained, “The history of tea in Turkey can go back about 100 years. However, coffee has been consumed in these lands for 600 years. What is more, it is a fact that coffee consumption has increased in our country in recent years. In addition to education, our institution also has a sales branch. When we examine the data here, while the annual coffee consumption per person was 350 gr in 2011, it has gone up to 1.1 kilograms in 2021. This corresponds to a surge of approximately 3.1 times. There are various reasons for this. Considering the pre-Covid-19 pandemic, people’s need to socialize had increased tremendously. The rise in cafes also met this need and people started to socialize in these cafes.”

“TURKISH COFFEE IS NOT A KIND, IT IS A COOKING METHOD”

Pointing out that the popularity of Turkish coffee has been on the rise worldwide in recent years, Koca added, “Turkish coffee is not actually a type of coffee, but a cooking method. When we look at it, there are three types of cooking methods: espresso-based coffee made with pressurized machines, filter coffee where water meets coffee with its own volume and Turkish coffee method. Turkish coffee is the only method of cooking coffee that is cooked with its grounds. We can say that we owe the popularity of this type of coffee in recent years to the Turks living in Europe. In addition, competitions on coffee and the success of our domestic brands that produce Turkish coffee machines are also important factors.”

“THE ONLY COFFEE THAT CAN TALK IN THE WORLD IS TURKISH COFFEE”

Defining Turkish coffee as ‘the only coffee derivative that can speak and express itself in the world’, Koca concluded, “Turkish coffee cooking method is the first coffee cooking method in history, invented by the Ottoman people and although it is unique in terms of cooking style, it has many varieties. Unlike other brewing methods, coffee is obtained by cooking it directly in water, not by filtering it. Still it is called a little more intense and bitter than other coffees, you can drink a light and delicious coffee when the right brewing techniques are used.”
