İSMAİL ÖZER: COTTON PRICES SEEM HIGHLY SATISFACTORY

İsmail Özer, Chaiperson of Söke (a district of Aydın province) TARİŞ Cotton Cooperative, the largest agricultural sales cooperative in Turkey and the Aegean Region, stated that the cotton producer is experiencing its golden years with the announced prices.

Indicated that cotton, which is a strategic crop due to its high added value and providing input to many industrial sectors, continues to be harvested for 2021 products, İsmail Özer said, “Despite the drought this year, the quality and yield of the crop is good and that the announced prices will also make the producers happy.”

Pointing out that the cotton, which was around 5 thousand 500 and 6 thousand 500 TL per tonne in this period last year, was traded between 12-13 thousand TL according to its yield this year and this is a very good figure for the producer, Özer noted, “Our producers are worried about the increase in input costs. However, the announced prices made cotton producers happy,”

“Production should always be supported to reduce dependency on imports”

Emphasing that cotton is a strategic product as it is an input to industrial sectors with high added value and that cotton production should always be supported in order to reduce dependency on imports, Özer explained, “Our textile industry currently consumes around 2 million tonnes of cotton. However, our production is below our needs. Therefore, as Turkey, we are in the position of a cotton importing country. Production needs to be supported to reduce dependency on imports. The current situation seems very satisfactory.”

“However, considering the increase in input costs, those who produce cotton, which is an important strategic product, should always be supported and I would like to express my satisfaction due to the prices that pleased farmers,” Özer added…
