The “Sustainable Fisheries Programme”, where young women experienced sustainable practices in the aquaculture sector, was successfully implemented in Izmir.

Organised in Izmir by the Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters Association, in collaboration with FEAP and FAO-GFCM, the “Programme on Sustainable Fisheries Practices for Young Women” event brought together Türkiye’s strong aquaculture infrastructure, sustainable production approach and the growing role of women in the sector with international participants.

Bedri Girit, Chair of the Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters Association, stated that within the scope of the event, they presented the country’s aquaculture sector to selected participants from Greece, Morocco, Spain, Ukraine, Algeria, Italy and Tunisia.

“The active role of women and their contributions to the sector in stages such as research, processing and packaging in the farming sector were observed during company visits,” Girit said.
66 percent of Turkish fishery products exports come from the Aegean…

“While Türkiye’s fishery products exports reached 2.2 billion dollars in 2025, approximately 66 percent of these exports were from the Aegean Region,” he noted.
Ufuk Atakan Demir, Member of the Board of Directors of the Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters Association, added, “We emphasised that the inclusion of women in the sector is not merely a matter of equality, but also a critical factor that supports innovation, resilience and sustainable long-term development.”
