HAYRETTIN UCAK-MUHAMMET OZTURK: WE WANT TO GROW IN THE INDIAN MARKET

Press release…

Turkish exporters want to strengthen their position in the Indian (Bharat) market, which is the most populous country in the world and whose economy is growing day by day.

Shri Mijito Vinito, Consul General of India in Istanbul, visited Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EIB) with a delegation consisting of officials from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Indian businessmen. During the visit, there was a consensus on the development of foreign trade between Türkiye and India.

Sharing the information that 1 billion 230 million dollars of exports were made from Türkiye to India in the 11-month period of 2023, Hayrettin Uçak, Chair of Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, said that they aim to ramp up exports to India much more.

“As the agricultural sector, we exported 207 million dollars to India in the 11-month period of 2023 and 80 million dollars to this country as the fresh fruit and vegetable sector,” said Uçak, adding, “We export apples to India the most from Türkiye. Apple exports to India continue strongly thanks to a protocol signed between the two countries. We want a similar protocol to be made for pomegranate, grape and cherry products. In this way, India will have Turkish flavours and we will gain a new and strong market in exports. We expect the governments of Türkiye and India to implement new protocols quickly.”

Öztürk: “We demand the uninterrupted implementation of the 2019 agreement on poppy seed exports”

Emphasising that India is the largest buyer of poppy seeds, of which the Aegean Region is the leader in production and exports, Muhammet Öztürk, Chair of the Aegean Grains, Pulses, Oil Seeds and Products Exporters’ Association, requested support from Consul General Shri Mijito Vinito to overcome the bottleneck in poppy seed exports to India.

Reminding the agreement made between the two countries in 2019 regarding the export of poppy seeds produced in Türkiye to India, Öztürk noted, “According to the agreement between the authorities of the two countries, it is vitally important to regularly announce the country quota that must be communicated by the Indian side every year. This process must continue uninterruptedly for the healthy continuation of production and exports.”

“We expect the Indian side to support us to send our products waiting in warehouses in Turkey to India,” Öztürk concluded…
