Hayrettin Uçak: Bringing production under cover is vital in order to prevent the damage caused by climate change

Press release…

Hayrettin Uçak, Chair of the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, who is also a producer, stated that climate change has made itself felt more clearly today and that it is imperative to switch to covered production and to spread agricultural insurance in order to prevent the agricultural sector from being affected by cold weather, frost and hail in March and April.

Explaining that Türkiye’s exports of agricultural products surged by 3.3 percent in 2024 and reached 36.2 billion dollars, Uçak said, “The share of agricultural products in our total exports was 16 percent. The 2024 exports of agricultural products of our Aegean exporters reached 7.6 billion dollars with an increase of 4 percent. While the unit price per kg in the export of agricultural products in our region was 2.23 dollars in 2023, it reached 2.55 dollars in 2024 with an increase of 13 percent”.

“With the effect of technology, digitalisation and innovation, we achieved higher value-added exports in 2024. In 2024, as the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, we implemented the ‘Third Generation Agricultural Entrepreneurship Training Programme’ for the second time in order to bring young people to the agricultural sector. Experts shared their experiences with 82 young people who are graduates or current students of food engineering and agricultural engineering. In our programme, young farmer candidates also visited enterprises and gardens,” he note.

Pointing out that they expect from them projects that will prevent food losses and enhance total quality and productivity, he added, “We believe that they will add a lot of strength to the R&D side of the agricultural sector.”
