Harvest has started in the variety of ‘Maraş-18’ walnut, which has a geographical indication registration certificate in Kahramanmaraş province. Maraş-18, which has an annual yield of 20 thousand tonnes and challenges America’s ‘Chandler’ walnut, is exported to Iran, Iraq, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
Harvest has started in registered walnuts in Kahramanmaraş region, which includes products with geographical registration marks such as ice cream, pepper and tarhana. Walnuts produced in large and small gardens on an area of 100 thousand decares throughout the province became an important source of income for farmers.
In addition to the classical harvest, the farmers, who have switched to modern techniques in production, are harvesting in combination with walnut whisking and peeling machines.
Farmers who obtain quality crops with the drip irrigation system look happy.
10 THOUSAND TONNES EXPORTED…
Approximately 10 thousand tonnes of the harvested product is exported to countries such as Iran, Iraq, Russia and Saudi Arabia, while the rest is consumed throughout the country. In the province, where a walnut harvest of 20 thousand tonnes is expected, while a feverish walnut harvest is being made.
Indicating that Kahramanmaraş’s walnut is a rival to America’s walnut, Onikişubat District Agriculture and Forestry Director İsmail Kıraç said, “Maraş-18 walnut has spread all over the world. If America has ‘Chandler’, Kahramanmaraş has its own variety, ‘Maraş-18’ walnut. This walnut is the best quality walnut in the world.”
“According to TURKSTAT data, 20 thousand tonnes of walnuts, 14 thousand tonnes of which are registered, are produced.
