“Global rice trade has shifted focus to domestic markets”

Press release…

Ahmet Tiryakioğlu, Chairman of the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TİM) Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds, and Products Sector Committee, announced that the global wheat outlook for the 2025/26 season presents a relatively positive picture due to expected increases in supply and consumption.

Tiryakioğlu also stated that the new season will be a period in which production and consumption in the global rice market will reach record levels, but trade volume will decline slightly.

“According to the latest data from the FAO, global rice production is expected to reach a record level of 538.7 million tonnes, while consumption is expected to reach 538.8 million tonnes. Underlining that while India is maintaining its market share with competitive prices, other Asian exporters are experiencing growth constraints under this pressure, he noted, “Japan’s decision to import rice from South Korea for the first time in many years due to price hikes in rice, prompting government intervention, is evidence of how sensitive the supply-demand balance in the Asian market has become. This outlook necessitates strategic observation for countries like Türkiye, which are not major rice importers but are directly affected by global grain prices.”

“Rising costs, exchange rate movements and competitive pressure in the external market are becoming decisive factors in domestic price formation and the costs passed on to consumers,” he added…
