Canada; olive oil exporters’ new route!

Press release…

Emre Uygun, Chair of the Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters Association, said that the high customs duties imposed by the European Union on olive oil exports from Türkiye to the EU weaken the competitiveness of the Turkish olive oil sector.

Emre Uygun reiterated his demands that Türkiye be granted the same zero customs duty advantage enjoyed by countries such as Morocco and Tunisia in their olive oil exports to the EU.

“We expect our olive oil to be among the priority issues in the Customs Union Agreement, which is currently under review. We are requesting a duty-free quota of at least 60,000 tonnes from the EU. Similarly, in the Free Trade Agreement negotiations with the United Kingdom, the evaluation of our olives and olive oil as strategic products will strengthen our position in this important market,” Uygun said.

Exporters’ new route: Canada

Pointing out that the olive oil sector is a national and local sector that exports without the need for imports and provides net foreign exchange income, Uygun explained, “With this responsibility, we continue to open up to new markets and enhance our share in existing markets. As part of our promotional and marketing activities, following the sectoral trade delegations we organised to distant markets such as Brazil and Australia in line with the Ministry of Trade’s Far Countries Strategy, we conducted a sectoral trade delegation concurrently with the ‘Natural Products Expo West’ fair held in the United States between 3-7 March 2025.”

“Through bilateral business meetings and visits to retail chains during the delegation, we established important business connections. We promoted Turkish olive and olive oil at fairs such as the Summer Fancy Food Show in the United States, Foodex in Japan and the China International Import Expo in China, and increased our visibility through tasting events. We recently participated in the 18th Edible Oil Expo held in Guangzhou, China. Our next stop will be the ‘Canada Sectoral Trade Mission’ in September, with the participation of 18 of our companies,” Uygun added…
